EchoLink Introduction
EchoLink gives licensed amateur radio operators a way to communicate through the Internet while still remaining connected to real ham radio activity. Instead of being limited only to the range of a handheld, mobile radio, base station, or local repeater, EchoLink can connect an operator to repeaters, simplex links, and other licensed hams around the world. It can be used from a computer, smartphone, tablet, or through a properly connected radio node.
For ham operators, EchoLink is useful because it extends the
reach of amateur radio without requiring large antennas, high power, or ideal propagation conditions. A ham traveling away from home can still check into a local net, a club member can connect to a distant repeater, and operators can keep in touch even when they are outside normal RF range. It is especially helpful for club communications, nets, public service support, emergency backup planning, and simply enjoying conversations with other hams in places that would otherwise be difficult to reach.
