Parks & Summits on the Air (POTA / SOTA)
Parks on the Air (POTA) and Summits on the Air (SOTA) are two popular amateur radio activities that combine the enjoyment of ham radio with the great outdoors. POTA encourages operators to make radio contacts from designated parks, while SOTA focuses on operating from qualifying mountain summits. Both programs offer opportunities to set up portable radio stations, communicate with other amateur radio enthusiasts, and earn awards for participation. You don't even have to leave home to join the fun! Operators can participate by contacting stations transmitting from parks or summits. Whether you enjoy outdoor adventures or simply making contacts from your home station, POTA and SOTA offer exciting ways to experience amateur radio. The graphics below introduce both programs and explain how you can get involved.
One of the great advantages of POTA and SOTA is the freedom to operate amateur radio away from home. Many ham operators face restrictions on installing outdoor antennas because of homeowners associations (HOAs), limited yard space, or other obstacles. Portable operation allows these enthusiasts to set up antennas in suitable outdoor locations and enjoy radio communications that might be difficult from home. HF radio is particularly popular for making contacts across the country and around the world, although VHF and UHF are also used, especially from elevated locations during SOTA activities. Best of all, getting started doesn't require an elaborate or expensive station. A modest portable radio, a suitable antenna, and a little enthusiasm can provide hours of enjoyment!
