Intro to Software Defined Radio (SDR)

Software Defined Radio (SDR) is an exciting and affordable way to explore the world of radio communications. Unlike traditional radios, which rely primarily on electronic circuits to process radio signals, SDR uses computer software to perform many of these functions. With a simple SDR receiver, an antenna, and a computer, you can listen to a wide variety of radio signals, including amateur radio conversations, aircraft communications, marine traffic, weather broadcasts, and much more. One of SDR's most interesting features is its ability to display a visual representation of radio activity across a range of frequencies, allowing you to actually see signals as well as hear them. Many SDR receivers are available for less than $50, making this technology an inexpensive and enjoyable way for beginners to discover the fascinating world of radio. The following graphics and videos introduce the basics of SDR, explain how it works, and demonstrate some of the many things you can do with it.
